Essential Tips for Beginners Preparing for the Big Walk in Epping Forest

Epping Forest is an incredible escape just outside of London, perfect for those wanting to immerse themselves in nature. Preparing for the Big Walk can feel both exciting and overwhelming. As I got ready for my first adventure, I was eager to explore the lush trails, breathe in the fragrant air, and enjoy the calm surroundings. However, I quickly learned that being well-prepared is crucial for a fantastic experience. In this guide, I’ll share some essential tips that helped me prepare for the Big Walk in Epping Forest, ensuring you have your own unforgettable adventure.

Understanding the Route

Before starting your journey, it’s important to know the route. Epping Forest has various trails, each with different scenery and levels of difficulty. Begin by checking the official Epping Forest website or local hiking apps. These sources provide maps and detailed information about the various paths available. The entire route was around 28 kms or 14 miles from Manor park to Theydon Green and was masterfully paced by the excellent walk leaders and volunteers.

Researching the distance and estimated walking time for each trail will help you choose one that fits your fitness level. For my first walk, I chose a trail that was around 3 miles long, which allowed me to enjoy the stunning views without feeling rushed. This was stepped up to 6 and 7 miles as soon as possible and it is dependent on your fitness level. people with existing health issues should be careful not to exceed their fitness capacity.

Gear Up for Success

Having the right gear can make a big difference in your hiking experience. From my first walk, I learned the importance of proper footwear. Wearing the wrong shoes left my feet sore and uncomfortable. Here's a list of essential items to consider:

  • Footwear: Invest in a good pair of hiking boots or shoes with solid support and grip. Aim for shoes that have at least a 1-inch heel and deep treads to navigate uneven surfaces. Remember to break them in before the walk to avoid blisters. Avoid trainers and sneakers. I was using a trusty old pair of Scarpa GTX boots.

  • Clothing: Dress in layers to adapt to changing weather. A lightweight base layer that wicks moisture, an insulating middle layer, and a waterproof outer layer are ideal for keeping dry and warm. I had made the bumble of using a pair of denims and while they will serve - specialty hiking trousers will be better as they have technical layers which may be water / wind proof.

  • Backpack: A comfortable backpack is essential for carrying your supplies. I found a lightweight option that fit snugly and didn’t bounce around during my walk. Do not try to pack everything and the kitchen sink as the rest stops are well planned and food / drink is available. Carry your trash back with you.

  • Hydration: Bringing enough water to stay hydrated is critical. Aim for half a liter of water per hour of walking. Use a Hydration bladder to ease the walk.

  • Snacks: Pack energy-boosting snacks like mixed nuts, granola bars, or fruit to keep your energy up. A small snack every hour can help you maintain stamina throughout your hike.

  • Ancillaries: A small first aid kit with minimal gear, a flashlight or headlamp (fully charged) and a change of socks may make all the difference in comfortable rambling or shuffling in misery.

Know the Weather

Epping Forest’s weather can be unpredictable. Always check the forecast before you head out. On one occasion, I started under sunny skies but was caught in unexpected rain. Here's how to stay prepared:

  • Checking the forecast: Use a reliable weather app for up-to-date information. Bear in mind that these apps are also not infallible.

  • Dressing appropriately: If rain is expected, bring a waterproof jacket and consider quick-drying clothing. A hack which i saw was the use of Dry Robe (TM) and plastic rain proofs - these are expedient in the field but if you plan on walking regularly, investing in proper gear is better.

  • Planning for the sun: On sunny days, apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect yourself from UV rays.

Prioritizing Safety

Safety is vital when hiking. Here are some tips that kept me safe during my Big Walk:

  • Tell someone your plans: Always inform a friend or family member about your hiking route and expected return time for added safety. Also do not fall behind the last trail marker who is there to guide stragglers.

  • Stay on marked trails: Stick to designated paths. This minimizes your chances of getting lost and helps protect the forest’s ecosystem. You would be amazed to know that there are several sites of Special Scientific Interest and Ares of Special Concern inside the forest and that the root systems of the trees are vulnerable.

  • Carry a first aid kit: An accessible first aid kit is wise to have on hand. Ensure it includes bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers.

  • Know your limits: Listen to your body and know when to take a break. If you’re exhausted, sit down for a moment and take a drink of water. Do not hesitate to get in touch with the walk marshals and the volunteers in case of any medical emergency or requirements.

Embrace the Experience

One of the greatest rewards of hiking in Epping Forest is connecting with nature. During my first walk, I concentrated on appreciating the beauty surrounding me. Try these methods to heighten your experience:

  • Take photos: Capture the breathtaking landscapes and unique plants and wildlife you come across on your journey. Just don't let it detract from the moment.

  • Practice mindfulness: Take a moment to breathe deeply and appreciate the sounds of the forest, like birdsong and leaves rustling in the wind. This can be a refreshing break from everyday stress.

  • Engage with fellow hikers: Don’t hesitate to talk to other walkers. Sharing experiences and tips can enrich your journey. Also be kind as you don't know what the other people on the walk are overcoming just to be there.
