Binoculars review - Vortex Viper HD 10 x 42

I have been a wildlife aficionado my entire life and a technophile to boot. Based on extensive review, I picked up a pair of Vortex Viper HD in 10x mag with a 42 mm objective. These have been my go-to and only pair of binos that I used for almost all my wildlife observation, and they sufficed until I started deer stalking.

Build Quality- Very well built for the money ! Vortex includes the base Glasspak and two harness options in the price point. I like the build quality of Viper products as they are robust and the grippy rubber helps with a secure hold in the wet.

Optics Quality- Crisp and clear but with some edge haze- take your time to focus the diopter well. The Eyecups need to be out for people without glasses and in for those who use glasses. The binos can focus down to about 10 yds.

Harness Quality- Base harness (Glasspak) included for free - budget for a strap or aftermarket harness system as the Glasspak is too large for this pair and the securing clasp almost fails everytime. Can be remedied by keeping a foam piece on the top but is not ideal.

My reason for upgrade- In the nuanced world of UK deer stalking where an extra tine or mainbeam on a deer head could mean several hundred pounds in trophy fees, it behooves one to be very very mindful indeed. Further for some species, identification in the off season and sex discrimination is also critical. You wouldn't want to shoot a mature female with kids any more than shoot an out of season male.

The struggle was real in low light and at long distances where the glass quality starts to matter. My guides Swarovski was more capable but also 6 times the price.

This is not an apples to apples comparison but an extreme hyperbole- the Swarovski's are a league apart in price and glass both. further the Vipers have a single diopter adjustment on the right eye while the Swarovski have a dual diopter setup.

Verdict- if you are a casual wildlife observer and nimrod- you will be served well by the Vortex Vipers. My Vipers are now doing duty as the family binos but i wouldnt be too upset in case they were all i had on me for a hunt.
